Did You Know these signs can all be bit related?

Bit Evasions, What Do They Mean

Did you know any of the following issues with your horse can be bit related: Chomping, open mouth, feeling heavy, avoiding the contact, not responding to rein aids, head tilting, feeling stiff and unyielding, not accepting the contact …the list goes on. Some horses will show quite extravagant evasions, some will start off with small changes. It is up to us a riders to take not and make some changes. If you are unsure about the evasions have a look at my Common Bit Evasions Guide HERE, it has in depth information and bit recommendations to help you and your horse.

These behaviours are your horses way of letting you know something isn’t quite right and needs your attention. Horses don’t communicate with sounds, they use visual and physical signs. The evasions listed above are all very common, yet often seen as bad behaviour, but they’re not.

Most evasions will start off small and grow into worse behaviour, this is usually when I get called out. Sometimes it can be a poorly chosen or fitted bit, or perhaps behaviour associated to lameness.

If you’re starting to notice changes in your horse and don’t know where to begin, we are here to help. We offer different types of bit fitting consultations, (Click HERE for information)  all designed to help you and your horse, whatever stage you’re at. Pop us a message HERE to find out more.
