Bits and Hands

Do you know how much the bit and your hands influence the reactions from the horse when you ride?

When we tack up, and then get on board, do we really think about what the horse feels when we take up the reins, how the bit feels in the horses mouth? As soon as your hands touch the reins, that pressure acts on the most sensitive part of the horse as a rider we will touch: The mouth. A horses mouth is filled with so many intricate sensory receptors, including the palate, tongue, bars and lips. Just think how sensitive your own mouths are, the horse is the same.

As a bitting consultant I always consider what the horse feels, how the chosen bit acts on different parts of the mouth, how much pressure they exert and the areas they affect.

For many years in the past, the choice of bit has always been about the control it gives to the rider, and what the rider wants from it, very little concern has been given to how it feels for the horse and their comfort.

Now times are changing.

I have have carried out extensive research and training as to which types of bits the horse actually prefers and responds well to. So, instead of trying bits the rider wants for their horse, I choose bits that work for the horse, to alleviate the evasions exhibited, and then the rider can receive a better reaction. Once the rider is feeling a good response to the rein aids, the rider can then become more subtle, stiller and lighter with their hands, which in turn can give them a feeling of almost seamless communication between horse and rider.  This is the ultimate goal for the majority of riders, whatever their chosen discipline.

My aim as a bit consultant is to consider the needs of both the horse and the rider, and to help make riding your horse much more enjoyable for both parties. Choosing the right bit is the difference between having kind hands or harsh hands.
