How often do you check your tack before you ride?
Hopefully every time! In the real world we have all tacked up in a rush and had a second thought about inspecting, however, try to make time for a check at least once a week.
It’s so important to check your equipment over before and after you ride. Some leather can wear quite easily, and stitching can come apart and sometimes go unnoticed until it breaks.
Different types of leather can age in different ways, most will stretch a little, some may become brittle, some may become quite rough. Some leather may not fare well if it gets wet, and will dry out to become quite weakened. A good saddle soap/balm will help to keep the leather in top condition.
Checking the stitching on your reins needs to be done every time you ride – a rein snapping when you need it can cause a lot of problems! Safety is paramount!
Remember to check the stitching on the top of your stirrup leathers also the part where the stirrup sits as this can become fatigued.
Girth straps are another vital piece of equipment that keeps you safe, and need regular checks.
Always take the time to inspect your bit and bridle.
Some ‘gold’ colour bits can wear faster than you might expect, so always check the joints and rings. Plastic bits should be inspected after every ride to ensure they aren’t damaged by the horses teeth. A sharp piece of plastic can easily lacerate the tongue if used.
Remember – a quick two minute tack check will keep you and your horse safe.
